  • Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology

Yorkville University, one of the first universities in Canada to focus on degree programs offered primarily online, has created one of Canada’s most dynamic and practical Masters programs in the field of counselling psychology.

By assembling a first-class and diverse group of professors, the University has established a program that draws on a full range of contemporary research and practice paradigms. The program is designed to give our graduates the strongest possible base from which to start or continue down the path as a professional counsellor.

In an increasingly complex world, the need for counselling and support has never been greater. In the Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP), Yorkville University has diverged from the typical graduate school focus on basic research to a focus on the acquisition and synthesis of knowledge and skills relevant to the practitioner. The program is oriented towards graduating practitioners who are able to quickly put their learning to work in the real world.

The Faculty of Behavioural Sciences houses the counselling psychology program and through a periodic review process assures the program is responsive to and evolving with society as social norms change. Yorkville University prepares students to adapt to these changes using sound judgement, personal resources, and an in-depth understanding of the practical issues confronting the complex world of professional counselling.

    Online & Practice-based Learning

Yorkville University’s Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology is offered primarily online, but has a significant supervised practice component. This model allows the university to deliver quality graduate level degree programs to students whose work, family commitments, or other life circumstances may make it difficult for them to study in a traditional in-class and on-campus setting.

The program comprises six to seven full-time terms of study and takes approximately 24 months to complete. Students attending part-time will take longer to complete the program. In the first five trimesters, courses are delivered online and allow for an unprecedented level of communication among students and faculty using a state of the art electronic learning platform.

The sixth and seventh terms of study are the practicum portion of the program. Students gain 400 hours of counselling experience in a supervised practicum, at least 200 hours of which are direct client contact hours. Practicum placements are normally located in the students’ home community and are supervised by a practicing professional counsellor. While in the practicum placement, students attend faculty-led seminars, meet faculty for individual supervision, and complete self-directed skills development exercises. Overall, the practicum is an important aspect of the program; it provides students with professional and academic supervision to help them integrate the theory they have learned into real counselling situations.
