Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology
Yorkville University, one of the first universities in Canada to focus on online/blended degree programs, has created one of Canada’s most dynamic and practical Masters programs in the field of counselling.
By assembling a first-class and diverse group of professors, the University has established a program that draws on a full range of contemporary research and practice paradigms. The program is designed to give our graduates the strongest possible base from which to start or continue down the path as a professional counsellor.
In an increasingly complex world, the need for counselling and support has never been greater. In developing this program, Yorkville University has diverged from the typical graduate school focus on basic research to a focus on the acquisition and synthesis of knowledge and skills relevant to the practitioner. The program is oriented towards graduating practitioners who are able to quickly put their learning to work in the real world.
The Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, Department of Psychology, sponsors the counselling psychology program and through a periodic review process assures the progam is responsive to and evolving with society as social norms change. Yorkville University prepares students to adapt to these changes using sound judgement, personal resources, and an in-depth understanding of the practical issues confronting the complex world of professional counselling.
Online/Blended Learning
True to its mission, Yorkville University’s Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology is offered using an online/blended delivery model. This model allows the university to deliver quality graduate level degree programs to students whose work, family commitments, or other life circumstances may make it difficult for them to study in a traditional in-class and on campus setting.
The program is comprised of five full-time terms of study and takes approximately 20 months to complete depending on the length of the practicum. Students attending part-time will take longer to complete the program. In the first four trimesters, are delivered online and allow for an unprecedented level of communication among students and between student and professor using a state of the art electronic learning platform.
The term “blended” refers to the fifth term of study, which is the practicum portion of the program. The Director of Clinical Training works closely with students to help them find a in their home community. While there is no assurance students will obtain their first choice of practicum placement, the clinical training department makes every effort to accommodate student requests for practicum location, supervision, times on site, and type of population served. Overall, the practicum is an important aspect of the program because it helps students apply under professional supervision the theory they have learned to real counselling situations.
