Yorkville’s Dr. Ellyn Lyle Celebrates Launch of her 10th Book, ‘Re/humanizing Education’

The Dean of Yorkville University’s Faculty of Education, Dr. Ellyn Lyle, is set to celebrate the launch of her tenth book next month.

Re/humanizing Education, which was published on Dec. 16 by Brill, is a 21-chapter collection that aims to explore the “co-curricular capacity of lived experience to re/humanize education” through critical, qualitative, creative, and arts-integrated approaches.

“Many thanks to the wonderful scholars who added their voices to this new collection,” Lyle, the anthology’s editor, wrote in a message of acknowledgement to the book’s many contributors, including fellow Yorkville faculty member Sepideh Mahani

“I am so deeply appreciative of your compassion and wisdom as we individually and collectively advocate for re/humanizing education.” 

In Re/humanizing Education, Lyle and her fellow scholars explore ways of overcoming systems of education that often prioritize agendas that alienate people rather than engage them. 

“Reconceptualizing teaching and learning as a co-constructed praxis places individuals at the heart of education and, in so doing, regards knowledge acquisition as a process of understanding that is dynamically and personally negotiated at the intersection of self, subject, and relationality,” reads the text’s synopsis. 

“This approach, at once pedagogical and practical, has the capacity to transform the classroom from a place of containment to one of expansiveness.”  

Contributions to the collection include works by authors who explore:

– Co-curricular inclusion of lived experience for its potential to create more equitable and representative curricula 

– Co-curricular capacity of lived experience to advance relationality, both human and more than human 

– Co-curricular potential of lived experience to un/privilege the current prioritization of the quantifiable in favour of more inclusive and holistic epistemologies
