Dr.KopYorkville University’s Dean of the Faculty of Education, Dr. Rita Kop, recently attended an international conference on Massive Open Online Courses in Naples and Capri in Italy. The conference was organized by Naples University Federico II under the title: “Where are MOOCs going: the future of distance learning”.

The conference was for policy makers and strategic thinkers in the area of Higher Education innovation so academics and Higher Education administrators were present, but also MOOC platform providers.

The conference organizers suggested that: The MOOCs explosion has opened the way to debate – at times heated –regarding traditional HE business models, the importance of educational technology in self-learning, the role and status of teachers, and issues regarding assessment and accreditation where more personalised courses are concerned.

The conference was small, only around 20 people were invited, who each presented a position statement. Dr. Kop’s presentation was titled: The human element in learning: Dialogue, Ethics, Openness and Control in MOOCs. You can find a link to her presentation slides here.

“My research interest is in the human learning process and how new technologies might make a difference,” Dr. Kop said.  “As the conference was more a meeting of experts on the topic of MOOCs than a conference, it was possible to each set out our positions and views on MOOCs and then have a good conversation about these.”

Of course, Dr. Kop added, the Italian environment, a beautiful 18th century villa at Anacapri, the Italian weather and food made for a very pleasant experience!
