Alumna Judith Taylor Says Interior Design Makes a Difference in Lives

“In order to live a fascinating life – one brimming with art, music, intrigue and romance – you must surround yourself with precisely those things.”

The author of this quote is unknown, but it expresses a sentiment that award winning Interior Designer Judith Taylor said she lives by.

“I love creating a sense of luxury, I think that is very important,” Taylor explained. “I think what we surround ourselves with shapes who we are.”

Taylor, the principal designer at Judith Taylor Designs, comes from a family of furniture manufacturers. She said looking back design was always a passion, although it wasn’t always her career.

“Beautiful music, beautiful furniture and artwork was always a part of our life,” Taylor said. “It shaped who I am and I think it shapes everyone. If you surround yourself with things you love, I think it really matters.”

Taylor spent years as a main-frame computer programmer analyst, but after a 20 year career she decided to go back to school to study interior design at (under the International Academy of Design at the time). It wasn’t until her first major presentation in the program that Taylor had her instructor describe her as a strong visual thinker and that one comment opened her eyes.

“No body had ever put those words together for me before,” Taylor said. “We know so much now about how people learn and how their minds work… but when I was young and in school there were no special programs let alone terms like visual thinking.

“When you are a designer you are, kind of, always a designer and you look back over your childhood and your life and you realize you were doing stuff all along,” Taylor said.

Taylor graduated from the Interior Design program with high honours in 2007 and immediately started her company, Judith Taylor Designs. Early in her career, Taylor donated her services to be auctioned off for various charities and fundraisers. Coincidently, she had a string of clients near the beginning of her career who were all breast cancer survivors and who had won Taylor’s auctioned off services.

“One in particular said that the reason she bought my offer was because she had such a difficult year and she wanted some happy in her life,” Taylor recalled. “She needed help creating a family room where she and her husband and her children could build some new memories.”

The family wanted to start to rebuild their life and they wanted help creating a context for that, Taylor said. That experience showed Taylor early on the joy she could bring to others through her work.

“(This work) feels important,” Taylor said. “It is individual and personal and relevant.

“It really brings me joy to make people happy and to give them what they need,” Taylor said. “I can make a big difference in their lives and help them discover their style and their visual expression.”
