Guide to Student Support

Yorkville University offers a wide range of supports to help ensure students are successful throughout their programs, and beyond. Whether learning on-campus, or online, students can access a suite of self-help resources, participate in interactive sessions, and access one-on-one and group supports that are specially designed to help ensure their success.

Mental Health and Wellness

Our 24/7 online/phone mental health and well-being tool for students is called My Student Support (MySSP) and the app is available in both the Apple and Google Play stores. This great tool is available in multiple languages around the clock. MySSP also has supports for healthy living and student success, in addition to confidential counselling. Students can also make appointments with our wellness team on each campus and online.

Student Housing and Accommodations

  • 4stay is an online marketplace listing a variety of off-campus accommodation options, including fully furnished apartments with all utilities included, private rooms, shared rooms, entire homes for a semester, a year, month-to-month or short-term rentals, and even homestay programs.

Academic Accommodations and Accessibility

Yorkville University provides academic accommodations and accessibility supports for students with permanent, episodic, or temporary disabilities or medical conditions, helping to create a learning environment in which disabilities are not a barrier to completion of courses and programs. We do this, in part, by removing barriers to access, deploying technologies that facilitate access for students with disabilities, and providing academic accommodations.

Our Accessibility and Academic Accommodations office is available on-campus (Ontario) and online (Zoom or Phone) to assist students and faculty with developing an accessible learning environment.

Career Services and Supports

A team of Career Services Advisors offers one-on-one and group sessions, plus, webinars on several relevant career development topics, including career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, researching the labour market, and more. Career Services Advisors also maintain our YU Job Board, provide advice for finding part-time jobs, offer self-help resources, and host webinars and employer information sessions. The overall goal of this service is to help students identify the multiple career paths their program/degree might lead to, supporting students to find jobs and effectively manage, grow, and develop their careers.

International students also get free access to Devant’s career support portal — home to their Get Hired Master Class, weekly live workshops, live Q&A with immigration lawyers, AI-driven resume builders, mock interview tools, and a whole lot more.

Student Success Centre

The Student Success Centre provides a rich suite of resources across a wide variety of subjects aimed at helping students be successful. Whether students are looking for tools to support their study, strategies for managing stress or seeking tutoring and writing supports, the Student Success Centre is a key entry point into the vast array of services designed to help all students be successful.

Public Transit Discount for Post Secondary Students

TTC

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) offers a monthly Metropass for post-secondary students at a discounted price. A TTC Metropass allows you to travel on TTC vehicles (Subway, Streetcar, Bus, and WheelTrans) anytime and for any length of time for the duration of the month.

 

How do you get a TTC Metropass?

  • Step 1: Obtain the following: proof of enrollment letter, current student card confirming that you are an eligible student enrolled in a full-time or part-time degree granting program, and a piece of government issued photo identification.
  • Step 2: Bring the above items to the TTC Photo Centre at Bathurst Subway Station (located on Subway Line 2, one stop east of Bloor-Yonge Station), and have your photo taken for a TTC Student Photo Identification Card. You must always travel on the TTC with your TFS Student Card AND your TTC Student Card!

Bathurst Station is not an accessible subway station. If you are traveling with a mobility device or have difficulty accessing Bathurst Photo ID Centre, please contact Customer Service at 416-393-4636 (weekdays, 8:00am – 5:00pm, closed holidays) in advance for assistance.

PRESTO Card

If you find that your transit costs could be less than what a monthly TTC Metropass is worth, consider purchasing a PRESTO card. PRESTO cards can be manually or automatically loaded with funds from your bank account and deducted according to how many trips you take. To pay a student fare, you will need to set a concession on your PRESTO card, which can be done at the Customer Service Centre at Davisville Subway Station (Subway Line 1) – 1900 Yonge Street. Bring your TTC Student ID Card (see above) and your TFS Student Card.

Degrees by Jurisdiction

System Requirements

At a minimum, Yorkville University students should have a DSL, cable or equivalent internet connection with 5mbps download speed as a minimum, email capability, and access to one of the following web browsers:

  • Google Chrome, version 80 or higher (current is best)
  • Mozilla Firefox, version 70 or higher (current is best)

Note: Yorkville does not recommend using other browsers such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Safari.  Students using an Apple computer are recommended to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox which is available for free download online.

Students should have a computer capable of accessing the internet and have experience using email and browsing web pages; recommended minimum computer configuration includes:

  • A PC or Mac with Intel Core2, Core i3 or AMD Athlon X4, A or FX Series or Phenom class processor
  • 8gb or RAM memory
  • 2gb or more free disk space

Up-to-date anti-virus software is also highly recommended. Avast, AVGFree, BitDefender, Windows Defender or Sophos are good anti-virus programs which have free editions free for personal use.

Finally, students will need office software including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools (such Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and other software tools to submit assignments electronically. As part of enrolment to a Yorkville University program students will be provided with a free Microsoft Office 365 license.

Bachelor of Interior Design Technology Requirements

  1. The above system and software requirements are mandatory for all online students.
  2. The above system and software requirements are recommended for on campus students who plan to complete coursework without being on campus.

Interior Design Computer System Requirements

  • Intel Core i5/i7 or Core m Series processor or AMD equivalent
  • 8gb RAM or greater (16gb is recommended)
  • 8gb of free disk space for installation of software
  • Graphics card with 512mb of memory (a discrete graphics card is not required but is strongly recommended)
  • Speakers/Microphone or headset (only required if taking courses delivered online)

Additional Requirements for ADOBE Creative Suite and Autodesk Building Design Suite (required for Term 1 online courses) https://www.adobe.com/ca/creativecloud.html

  • Windows 8 or 10 (Home, Professional or Enterprise Edition) running in 64bit mode (32bit mode will not support AutoDesk applications)
  • 30gb of available hard-disk space for installation: additional free space required during installation (cannot install on flash-based storage devices)
  • Graphics card with 512mb of memory (a discrete graphics card with 1gb or more memory is not required but is strongly recommended)
  • Broadband internet connection required for on-line service

 Software Requirements

Note: Users of Mac computers may use the native Mac version of the software, but will face numerous differences in the user interface between it and the PC version. It is therefore recommended that students without access to a PC run the PC version through a Windows emulator or virtual machine on their Macs. Check the AutoCAD website for information on system requirements and options on running AutoCAD software on a Mac.
