Associate Dean, Counselling/Psychology
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Behavioural Science, the Associate Dean provides leadership for academic planning, quality assurance, and academic operations, particularly in the areas of program development and review, faculty policies and procedures, program admissions and student rights and responsibilities. The Associate Dean ensures effective communications and follow-up within the Faculty and University committee structure.
This is a senior academic administration position located at the University’s campus in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Primary Responsibilities
Academic Leadership
- With the Dean, lead program and curriculum planning and development.
- Handle plagiarism, academic integrity, student grievances, and academic appeals as required by University policy
- Develop and present strategies and practices to improve instruction and student satisfaction; compile data from and prepare analyses of student end-of-course surveys.
Academic Operations
- Maintain files and records related to program and curriculum planning and development, including new program proposals and program reviews.
- Member of Faculty Hiring committee; ensure that new faculty members are effectively oriented to University policies, program goals, course objectives and pedagogy as well as the LMS.
- Maintain faculty files as required by University policy
- Assist the Dean with contracts and payments for faculty and teaching assistants and with the bi-annual faculty performance review process
- Assist the Dean with faculty scheduling
- Ensure that faculty members submit grades on time and review final grades.
- Monitor currency and accuracy of relevant sections of the calendar, student handbook, faculty handbook, web site
- Liaise with the E-learning team to ensure that courses are updated each term according to Faculty policies.
- Compile data and analyses related to the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences for the University’s annual report to the Department of Post-secondary Education, Training, and Labour
- Contribute to preparation for periodic institutional and program reviews by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission
Use the existing committee structure to affect intra- and inter-Faculty communications:
- Serve as Secretary to and voting member of the Admissions Committee and Faculty Council; provide administrative support for the Program Advisory Committee; is a member of the Yorkville University Operations Committee and the Deans Council
- Teach at least one course per trimester
- Other duties and responsibilities, which from time to time, may be assigned.
Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in Counselling Psychology, Psychology, or a closely related field
- Academic and / or professional experience commensurate with a position as a senior academic administrator and leader
- Relevant experience in a post-secondary education environment, including program development, program accreditation, quality assurance practices, student and faculty policies.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Priorities of the Associate Dean – 2012
Program Development and Review
- Provide leadership in development of a program proposal for a BA in Psychology
- Assist with preparation for and follow up from the five-year review of the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology
- Assist the Dean as required in the preparation of material for the application to offer a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (PsyD (Counselling).
- Establish routine reporting, analysis and follow-up of student end of course surveys
Faculty Policies
- Work with the Dean to fully develop and implement a performance review procedure and cycle for all faculty members.
Profile of the Associate Dean
- A strong commitment to post-secondary professional education, particularly for working adult learners
- Understanding of and experience in online teaching and learning at the university level
- A record of academic and/or professional accomplishment
- Understanding of and commitment to academic policy and procedures at the university level
- Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in writing and orally
- Understanding of and commitment to collegial academic governance and management
- Willingness to locate in Fredericton, New Brunswick
